4.0 out of 5 stars Cool universe to explore, dragged down by social commentary and grammar issues
From AMAZON: Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2017

Not usually the subject matter that I read but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I personally think that there was a really solid story line here that needed a little more development. The idea was there but I think that the sexual and alcoholic issues described in the book over shadowed these ideas. Those thoughts coupled with some spelling and grammar issues (which were pretty easy to spot) bring my rating of the book down.

I would say that this book has a really cool universe that would be really interesting to explore, but some of the social commentary drags it down.

Although I don't usually read books of this subject matter... (S&M and sloppy alcoholic)... I thought, what the heck, the rest of the book summary looked intriguing. Well, I made it about halfway through it and just couldn't finish. It started with the obvious need of editing ("Someone" is not spelled "Somone.") Most of the book, I couldn't tell if the narrator or the characters were having a mental moment or if something was actually happening, pertinent to the story line. (Is this reality or Memorex?) Then there is the whole Radio World thing. (a city of advanced technology-yet stuck in the 1920's - what gives?) Again, reality or Memorex? All in all, it was a regular "trip through the blender; better experienced on some mind-altering prescription." Don't waste your time struggling through the book; there are too many well-written, grammatically correct books with a believable story line that you can read sober and still understand the plot. Lastly, if the author actually has a rational explanation at the end of the book, too bad it's after 630+ pages of "guess work."

On the flip side, if you want to read something superior in the thriller genre, read Bad Games by Jeff Menapace. Wonderful book; far superior to anything else on the market

The author’s contempt for every day people combine with a bizarre fetishization of thinly veiled real life sex crimes that you’d almost miss that he’s not a very good writer at all. Very pretentious stuff.

A novel that demands your full attention
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2013
Goodbye to Beekman Place is filled with brutal truths that are exposed through suggestive details and grand metaphors. The book begins with an intriguing murder mystery but partway through the narrative the focus changes to the characters' personal lives which leads to a discovery about the author's true intent with the novel. The murder mystery plot seems to be a feint to ensnare your attention as you learn to read between the lines to figure out the real story. At times it is fast paced, thought provoking, and dark. The writing is crisp and precise, almost compulsively so. I look forward to reading the author's future novels, as this one is a book that challenges the mind to look deeper than the words on the page.

    BASIC RULES:

Please use this page to write your reviews & comments about all three of my novels.  I don't post only the good reviews - I want to hear ALL OF THEM.  If you don't like my book, don't just say "it sucked" ... please give me specific examples of what you didn't like, what you found confusing, what caused you to set the story down before finishing - that sort of thing.

The ONLY time I will censor a comment is if it contains EXTREME profanity, violence, sexually-explicit  images, personal attacks (on anyone other than me), racism, hate-speech, SPAM, or just things that are so inappropriate, they have no business online.

Aside from that, have at it!

I'll comment if asked or when I feel necessary.  Also, please feel free to contact me directly via the "Dave's Bio/Contact Info" tab on the toolbar above.  I answer every message I receive.
